Moses Conteh is the Country Director. He is the charity’s leader in Sierra Leone. He liaises with the various government ministries and with the local community. He manages the charity team, deals with the charity’s finances in the country and manages projects such as the bulding works under Phase 1 and 2 and the new project installing a new science laboratory in the school. He is a member of the Extra Mile Board of Trustees and of the school’s Board of Governors. Moses has celebrated over 10 years exemplary service with Extra Mile.

Ishmael Bockerie is the charity’s Logistics Manager. He manages the school’s resources, including the issuing of text books, exercise books and stationary. He helps maintain the charity’s IT resources. He maintains the school’s reading scheme. He sources, prepares and serves the breakfasts for the students and staff on a daily basis. He helps with the construction of cupboards, desks and shelves. He organises and helps to run the after-school IT club. Ishmael has celebrated over 10 years exemplary service with Extra Mile.

Mohamed Conteh is the charity’s Site Manager. He is responsible for the maintenance of the school building, and organises the daily cleaning regime, especially important at this time of Covid-19. He helps to ensure that the site is safe for the students and staff, especialy when building work is being undertaken. With his trusty dog, Rocky, he helps to keep the site secure. Mohamed has provided exemplary service to Extra Mile since before the school opened in 2016.

Mary Tholley’s principal role with the charity is to cook for volunteers when they are in Sierra Leone and to provide the refreshments including meals, when Extra Mile provides training to its own staff and to staff from other schools. Volunteers adore the splendid meals she provides, reflecting local cuisine including fish dishes, reflecting the daily catch in Ober Funkia fishing village. Mary has celebrated over 10 years exemplary service with Extra Mile.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

LUKE TALMAGE - CEO

Luke is Somerset born and bred and attended University in Bath and Southampton.  He has been Headteacher of Manor Court Community Primary School (the school that he attended as a child) since April 2017, leading it to its first Ofsted ‘Good’ judgment in two decades in December 2019. He has been a Headteacher since 2012 and during his career, he was also the Headteacher of three other contrasting Somerset Schools – a small rural primary, a ten-class primary school with an extremely high proportion of forces children and a two-form junior school in challenging circumstances.  He is a Local Leader of Education for Somerset Local Authority (supporting schools across Somerset, Devon and Gloucestershire in their journey of improvement) and has been a member of the Somerset Education Design Team.  In his free time he is a trustee for two other charities (Chard Museum and a Church in Northampton), loves to travel, attend the theatre, read for pleasure, and is an avid Yeovil Town Football Club supporter.

Mike Fielding, Chairman

Mike began the Extra Mile mission.  He worked in secondary education for 35 years in the UK and also in Sierra Leone before starting the charity in 2009.  He is based in the UK but makes frequent visits to Sierra Leone for extended periods.

Moses Conteh, Country Director AND TRUSTEE

Moses is the Country Director for Extra Mile and the person you're most likely to encounter in Sierra Leone.  Moses is a trained teacher and also works at Services School, At all other times he is responsible for the volunteers and the running of the charity in-country including overseeing the development of the Extra Mile School and promoting other initiatives.

Roz Brookhouse, Trustee

Roz works full-time for Metso Minerals and helps handle the financial side of Extra Mile and makes sure we're working within our means.  Roz also sits on the Board of Trustees (a trustee since 2011) and supports the development of the charity in its fund-raising.

Barry Heaton, Trustee

Barry has extensive experience as an Advertising Art Director, and as a Property Consultant. He is lately retired and lives in Bolton, UK.  Barry has been a trustee and advisor to the charity since 2009.

Douglas WELLS TRUSTEE

Douglas trained as an engineer with GEC and after 40 years retired early from project management in 2017. He recently gained his amateur radio licence and helps his wife, Heide, with her bees, a joint activity of hive management and hive assembly. He has two children, Bethany and Emily. Douglas has been a trustee with Extra Mile since 2018.


DR. JANE BENTHAM.DR. BENTHAM IS A FURTHER EDUCATION LECTURER IN CHEMISTRY, AND BIOLOGY AT SALFORD CITY COLLEGE. She has taught science at services secondary school, juba, sierra leone. SHE IS A KEEN OUTDOOR PURSUITS ENTHUSIAST AND HAS BEEN A TRUSTEE…

Dr. Jane Bentham TRUSTEE

Dr. Bentham has recently retired as a further education lecturer in chemistry, and biology at Salford City College. She has taught science at Services Secondary School, Juba, Sierra Leone. She is a keen outdoor pursuits enthusiast and has been a trustee with Extra Mile since 2016.

Janet organises the charity's fund-raising work. She runs four allotments which produce flowers, vegetables and fruits for sale, and organises fund-raising events throughout the year. She also works with our Extra Mile team in Sierra Leone. She has been a trustee since 2016.

anne king trustee

Following a year spent in Nigeria as a VSO teacher , Anne has since completed a long career in Mathematics education in UK secondary schools. She joined Extra Mile as a volunteer in 2016 - teaching at Lady Patricia Kabbah secondary school whilst living in the soon-to-be opened Extra Mile school in Goderich. Since then Anne has worked with the charity as a trustee in the U.K. supporting the local Goderich teachers (mainly via zoom), producing the charity’s quarterly newsletter and helping with fundraising.


martin smidman trustee

Martin was a Comprehensive School teacher for over 30 years, finishing as a Senior Teacher and school ICT Manager. He also taught Economics and Business Studies. He was a Teacher Governor and is now Governor for a local Primary School. Martin visited Sierra Leone in the summer of 2013 with Extra Mile, when he taught Business Studies and English at the Agape Experimental School. He is responsible for the website and Social Media.

BRIAN HOY TRUSTEE

Brian is a qualified teacher who later joined Greater Manchester Police going on to serve as Detective Sergeant in the Major Incident Unit and latterly in the Force Intelligence Branch. After retirement he became a private landlord but continued his interests in skiing and sailing and became Commodore of his local sailing club in Bolton. He is also involved in voluntary mentoring work for Bolton Lads and Girls Club and volunteered with Extra Mile in November 2016. Brian is married with two grown-up daughters. He became a trustee in 2018.
